Experience

President, Forest Resource Consulting Inc., Tallahassee, Florida
1989 to present

This consulting business focuses on teaching ArcGIS, software development, and resource modeling.

As an ESRI authorized ArcGIS instructor, I have taught ESRI GIS to hundreds people of widely differing backgrounds. The ESRI courses I am authorized to teach are Introduction to ArcGIS I, Introduction to ArcGIS II and Working with ArcGIS Spatial Analyst. A number of custom courses have also been developed. At the 1998 ESRI User Conference, I received an ESRI award - Honorable Mention for Excellence in Teaching ESRI GIS. The award was the result of a numerical comparison by ESRI of the student evaluations of all courses taught by authorized instructors in 1997. Out of 543 authorized instructors, I was fourth.

Software development is an increasingly important part of my business. I have developed custom applications in Avenue, VB/Map Objects and VBA in ArcGIS. I am presently working on a project for the US Forest Service to build an interface in ArcGIS for CalPuff. CalPuff predicts in 3D the smoke plume generated by a wildfire or prescribed burn.

In the past, I have built several timber supply models using the ATLAS simulation model and Forest Survey data. Projects in the works are to embed the ATLAS model in ArcGIS and to develop a Landuse/Landcover change model in ArcGIS/Spatial Analyst.

Distributed Computer Systems Analyst, Florida Division of Forestry, Tallahassee, Florida
April 1996 to 2003

The Division of Forestry has over 900,000 acres in thirty plus State Forests around the State and fire suppression responsibility on over twenty five million acres.

ArcView and ArcGIS are used to give GIS support to the Division’s fire fighting efforts. My duties included providing GIS support to the Division’s fire fighting efforts. I participated in several incidents as a GIS Tech (GIST) giving GIS support to wildfire incidents within the state and out West. I also participated as a GIST in other incidents for Citrus Canker and in the Shuttle Recovery effort in Texas.

Field personnel use ArcView to manage each of the State Forests. My duties included supporting the field units in their use of ArcView and GPS, and training in the use of ArcView, ArcGIS, and GPS.

Additional duties were to design, develop and maintain custom ArcView/ArcGIS applications, and integrate ArcView into other applications currently being used, like the Division’s forest inventory system. Applications that I have developed include ArcView extensions to simplify digitizing timber stands, automating the extraction of data from the Division’s (Access) inventory system and a simple ArcPad type application for Division’s County Foresters developed in VB6/MapObjects.

During my last year with the Division, I was heavily involved in the development and definition of the Division of Forestry’s Data Model for managing Florida’s State Forests.
